COVID-19: Novel Coronavirus: Free digital textbooks

This is your guide to academic resources that are free due to the virus. It also contains links to sources of up-to-date Cuesta, regional, national and global information about the pandemic.

Free emergency textbook availability

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, several textbook publishers have made many digital textbooks available free of charge for this semester. If you don't find the textbook(s) you need at the resources below, please notify your instructor, visit Ask a Librarian, email library staff at circulation@cuesta.edu, or submit the form below for assistance in locating textbooks. 

VitalSource

VitalSource contains the largest collection of free textbooks available online this semester. To access the collection:

  1. Go to VitalSource bookshelf on your computer or download the app to your phone.
  2. Create an account. Important: use your Cuesta email in order to access free texts.
  3. Use the Explore tab, not the regular search, to find your textbook. Otherwise you will be asked to pay for the text.Bookshelf Explore tab
  4. Download your textbook, and you're done!

If you are unable to get a free textbook via the sources listed on this page, fill out the Library Materials Request Form and we will help you locate digital reserve textbooks or other library materials.

Red Shelf

Redshelf will provide students with up to 7 free eBooks from participating publishers. Program applies to students at non-profit, semester-based schools, and access runs through May 25th.

 

In response to the increasing impact of COVID-19, XYZTextbooks has made all of our online materials open and viewable for free. Navigate to our catalog and select any book cover to view the eBook. No login is required.

Cengage is offering free access to Cengage Unlimited. Click the logo above for instructions for creating an account and getting textbooks. Be sure click "start trial" (step 2), or you will be asked to purchase books.

The Open Lab in the library on the SLO campus (building 3200) will be open Mon. - Fri. 8 am - 5 pm for students lacking computers and internet access at home.
