According to the American Library Association:

Information Literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."

Why is Information Literacy Important?

Did you know:

  • A weekday edition of the NY Times has more information in it than a person learned in their entire lives in 1600?!
  • Or that more information has been created in the past 30 years than in the previous 5,000 years?!

These facts are a reflection of the information age we live in, meaning that information is now created faster than we can absorb it. With so much information available to us at our fingertips, it can often be overwhelming to quickly find accurate, reliable information. That is why it is important to be information literate in this day and age.
