  • Always connect to Google Scholar via the library website, either from the Databases List or from a Research Guide.
  • On Google Scholar, under Scholar Preferences, you can manually set your Google Scholar Library Links.

If you want ONLY results from an educational site, end your keyword search with    site:.edu

If you want ONLY results from a government site, end your keyword search with     site:.gov

If you want ONLY results from museum sites, end your keyword search with           site:.museum

(Note: no spaces between colons and be sure to include the  period after the colon)

To get ONLY results with PDFs, end your keyword search with       filetype:pdf

To get ONLY results with PowerPoint, end your keyword search with      filetype:ppt

  • Stop and reflect before engaging with the information
  • Investigate the source of the claim
  • Find better or more trusted coverage of the claim
  • Trace claims, quotes, and media back to the original context

Primary vs. Secondary Sources

A Primary source of information is first-person, original information. Examples:

  • a journal or diary
  • original research
  • interview
  • letter
  • speech
  • original work of art
  • government document
  • research article from a variety of databases and web sites

A Secondary source of information is material that has been taken from primary sources and then synthesized. Examples:

  • college textbook
  • biography
  • criticism
  • historical study
  • journal or magazine article that reviews original works
